Antur Flock Profile

Owned by Aberystwyth University, the Antur flock was established in 1988 to act as a research flock for the evaluation of new breeding technologies.

Initial work focused on the development of the ’Lean Index’ and the Elite Texel Sires Sire Reference Scheme. The flock was involved in the development of whole body CT scanning, in collaboration with SAC, to improve the accuracy of estimating carcass composition and muscularity in the live animal.

Since 2003 our rams have been sold as yearlings through the Performance Recorded Ram Sale held here at the University. Our aim is to sell high genetic merit yearling rams, functional and ready to work. Reared as commercial lambs, we do not feed excessive amounts of concentrate to allow their rumens to develop, ensuring our rams will not ‘melt away’ after purchase.

We are one of only a few breeders who physically collect faeces from every animal to produce FEC EBV’s.

Current research is focussed on developing gene markers for genes responsible for greater muscling.

Prospective buyers are welcome to view our rams by appointment.
