About the breed

Beulahs originate from the uplands of Mid Wales. However, the qualities of the ewe - her maternal ability, hardiness, easy-care characteristics and crossing potential have ensured that the breed has proved popular across Wales, is found in many English flocks and has retained its popularity in its home region. It is one of the post populous breeds in Wales; and because of its status as the favoured dam of the Welsh Mule (when crossed with the Bluefaced Leicester) its genetic influence extends very widely indeed.

The breed will thrive outdoors all-year-round on poorer quality pastures; will require the minimum of attention during the lambing season and yet will produce smart and sought after purebred or crossbred offspring. However, over the years the breed has not stood still with the introduction of a group breeding scheme as early as 1979. This early innovation has been built upon and breeding stock that has been selected for even greater productivity and profitability under commercial conditions can now be sourced from members of the Beulah Group Breeding Scheme. Members of the group are committed to recording their breeding flocks and selecting only animals showing superior commercial characteristics. To this end, selection is aimed at improving ewe milkiness; lamb growth rates and carcass quality. At the same time group members seek to retain the other qualities of the breed and breed type. Over the years this intensive selection by members of the group has shown real rewards. All individual animals within the scheme are recorded and assigned an index based upon their estimated breeding value for a range of traits.

If you are interested in purchasing recorded Beulahs a small selection of the animals available can be viewed through Stock for Sale. In addition, the Group always welcomes enquiries from potential new members / farmers interested in recording.
