Bridfa Flock Profile

suffolkThe Bridfa Suffolk flock was established in 1991 when 33 members donated ewes to form a nucleus flock and was based on rotating the best ram lambs around five families.

The commercial performance of the flock improved when recording was taken on board and joining the Sire Reference Scheme allowed access to the top performing rams in the UK.

The flock moved from IGER to its present location in December 2005 and came under the ownership of Aberystwyth University in 2008, with a condition that an annual bursary be awarded to a study that involves Suffolk sheep.

In response to industry indicators New Zealand genetics have been brought into the flock for evaluation under British conditions. We presently have sheep with 0%, 25% and 50% New Zealand genetics.

Our yearling rams are sold at The Performance Recorded Ram Sale held at Aberystwyth University and are produced on commercial lines.

To ensure our rams perform in a commercial environment lambs are turned out at 2 days of age, outwintered, and fed minimal concentrates throughout their lives.

We collect faeces from every lamb to calculate FEC EBVs.
